Exploring Nature’s Canvas: Lisa Boykin Adams, Featured Artist at Camden Horse & Hound Expo

By Meghan Adams

In the heart of Camden, South Carolina, where the traditions of the English South come alive in horse racing, foxhunting, and Southern hospitality, the air is tinged with the smell of pine and camellias. Dotted with historic homes, gardens, and horse stables, Camden is home to some of the most beautiful equestrian-themed events. Among them is the Camden Horse & Hound Expo, returning for its fourth year in 2023, uniting the community with a unique blend of artistry and equine splendor.

Adams discovered a renewed connection to her Southern roots after a career in television that saw her travel the world. After returning to Camden, she embarked on a journey to capture the natural beauty and history of the South Carolina lowcountry through her art. Her works, vibrant with colors and detail, are born of the landscapes, flora, and fauna she holds dear.

Her unique artistic expression sees new works on display, some of which are showcased for the first time at the Camden expo this year. Another new twist for this year’s expo is the introduction of live demos by Adams, giving attendees a behind-the-scenes look at her creative process. This rare opportunity to see a master at work has created significant anticipation among her fans.

In recent years, Adams has dedicated her time to researching and capturing the history of her husband’s family home, Woodbury House, built in 1848, where she also runs an art studio. There, she has explored traditional Southern themes, juxtaposed with contemporary techniques, producing works that are both nostalgic and fresh. Her studio, with large windows, offers views of the garden, inspiring much of her botanical work, resulting in pieces that celebrate the seasonal blooms and wildlife of the South.

Her artistic journey is rooted in a diverse background that includes a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Professionally, she leveraged her degree in visual communication to work as a producer and art director for television, and her creative endeavors have spanned from designing for major brands to directing short films and commercials. These experiences have enriched her storytelling, evident in the narrative quality of her paintings.

Beyond her notable achievements, Adams has been an active participant in the cultural and arts community, serving on boards such as the Camden Arts Association, Midlands Art Conservatory, and volunteering her time with the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County. Her works have been featured in galleries across South Carolina, Florida, and throughout the Southeast.

Adams’ commitment to preserving history and her community is evident in her commissioned projects. Her paintings grace many historic Camden homes and community spaces, including the newly renovated Camden Library. Her artwork is also part of permanent collections in institutions such as the South Carolina State Museum.

As the featured artist at this year’s Camden Horse & Hound Expo, Adams aims to immerse attendees in a world where the intrinsic connection between art, nature, and heritage intertwines. Her artwork for this year’s expo is available for silent auction.
